Effective January 21, 2026, the Department of State paused all immigrant visa issuances to nationals of countries determined to be at high risk of public benefits usage .
Affected countries include: Afghanistan, Brazil, China (PRC), Colombia, Cuba, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Haiti, India, Iran, Iraq, Jamaica, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen, and many others .
Important notes:
Dual nationals applying with a valid passport from a non-listed country are exempt
Tourist (nonimmigrant) visas are not affected by this pause
Existing valid visas are not revoked

Effective March 30, 2026, the Department of State expanded its “online presence review” to include applicants in the following nonimmigrant visa classifications :
A-3, C-3 (if a domestic worker), G-5
H-3, H-4 dependents of H-3
K-1, K-2, K-3
Q, R-1, R-2, S, T, and U classifications
These are in addition to H-1B applicants and F, M, J student/exchange visitors already subject to review.
What you need to do: All applicants for these categories are instructed to adjust privacy settings on all social media profiles to “public” or “open” to facilitate vetting
